The Ministry of Public Administration has canceled the public holiday on August 15, which is observed as National Mourning Day. This decision was officially announced in a gazette notification issued on Tuesday, August 13.
Prior to this, sources within the Ministry of Public Administration indicated that the notification canceling the public holiday on August 15 was prepared and ready. They mentioned that the gazette would be issued on Tuesday, August 13, following instructions from senior officials.
On Monday, the Advisor to the Interim Government for Home Affairs, Brigadier General (Retd.) M. Sakhawat Hossain mentioned that discussions regarding the holiday on August 15 would take place later that afternoon, with a final decision to be made during that meeting.
In the meantime, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh has demanded the cancellation of the public holiday on August 15, National Mourning Day. This demand was made in a statement signed by Maulana Azizul Haque, Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, on Monday, August 12.
Student Organizations at Dhaka University Decide Not to Observe National Mourning Day
Various student organizations at Dhaka University have collectively decided not to observe National Mourning Day on August 15. Additionally, they have agreed to postpone decisions related to student politics while focusing on consolidating the recent student and public uprising.
On Tuesday, August 13, the Liaison Committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced this decision. A meeting organized by the committee, which included representatives from all student organizations except for Chhatra Samaj (National Party) and Chhatra League (Awami League), led to this resolution.
