Bangladesh shut Schools and Colleges for 7 days amid heatwave

Bangladesh Government has shut the Educational Institutes including Primary and High Schools for the next 7 days due to the heatwave. The institutes will remain closed from April 21 to April 27, 2024, according to the official announcement.

After the Eid Ul Fitr Holiday, Primary and Secondary High Schools in the country are supposed to reopen on Sunday (April 21) according to the Holiday List issued by the Education Board. However, the institutes will remain closed for the next 7 days, till April 27, 2024, due to the heatwave.

The information was officially announced today (April 20) by Mahbubur Rahman Tuhin, senior information officer at the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education. He said that all government schools including Primary, High Schools, Child Welfare Trust, and learning centers will be closed from April 21 to April 27.

The authority has taken the decision in consideration of the health and safety of students, he said.

In addition, the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has announced the same decision for High Schools and Colleges.

“We will keep High Schools and Colleges closed till April 27 due to the heatwave. Institutes will reopen and classes will resume on Apr 28,” said Prof Jafar Ali, director of the Secondary Wing.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the highest heat waves are sweeping in various divisions including the Khulna and Rajshahi Division, Pabna, and Tangail districts. The authority issued a heat alert notice as the temperatures reached over 40°C in four divisions of the country.

Meanwhile, Met Office announced that the heat wave condition will remain the same across the country for the next five days starting from today, 9 AM.

Note that, Schools and colleges are closed for Ramadan and Eid Ul Fitr Holiday. According to the Primary and High School Holiday Calendar, schools and colleges are supposed to reopen on Saturday (April 21, 2024). But, the sudden heatwaves like the past year create health
